I wrote this song a couple months ago, while the FBI was staked outside of an apartment less than one mile from my parents’ house in Redlands, CA. The apartment was connected to a suspect in the San Bernardino, CA shooting on Wednesday, December 2. My parents are safe, no harm came to them, but as I watched while military vehicles rolled down the streets of my sleepy hometown on CNN, I couldn’t help but feel driven to write something.
While I don’t know for a fact why we have had so many shootings this year, I believe we are all far too disconnected. Now more than ever we need to come together in solidarity and love each other, converse, argue, compromise, and ACT.
Connect. Look up from your cell phone, or your computer, or your tablet and connect with another person. Our country is diverse in so many ways and it’s beautiful. Try giving a genuine smile to a stranger. Get to know someone who represents something different from you. Share your story and ask them about theirs.
“You can’t help it. An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” -Nina Simone
